How an IBC tank is built

An intermediate bulk container is three parts working together. An HDPE bottle holds the liquid. A galvanised steel cage wraps the bottle and takes the structural load, so the plastic is not carrying the frame. A pallet base under both carries the unit, which is what lets a forklift or pallet truck lift a full 1000 litres without any special handling gear. A discharge valve sits at the bottom front for gravity draining, and the top of the bottle takes the fill.

That construction is the whole argument for the format. Because the cage carries the load rather than the bottle, 1000 litres occupies one pallet position instead of being spread across several drums. Because everything sits on a pallet base, an IBC tote moves with the same equipment already on your loading bay. And because the discharge valve is fitted as standard, decanting is a matter of opening a valve rather than pumping or tipping. If you need to stack units, ask us about the specific unit and contents — that depends on the cage, the liquid and your own racking, and it is not a question to answer in the abstract.

1000 litres, one footprint

One 1000-litre IBC tank holds the same volume as five 200-litre drums. The practical difference is not only the volume — it is the count of things to handle.

• One pallet position instead of five drums to arrange, chock and strap.
• One fill point and one valve instead of the closures on five separate drums, each of which has to be opened, sealed and checked.
• One unit to move, so five separate lifts become one.
• One item to wash or recondition at end of use rather than five.

Where drums still win is on split loads: a single product going to several sites, or several small volumes of different products. New and reconditioned IBC tanks

We supply IBC containers both ways. A new unit is an unused bottle in an unused cage on an unused pallet base. A reconditioned unit is a used IBC tank that has been through our yard: washed inside and out, dried, inspected, leak tested, and refitted with sound caps, gaskets and valve before it is palletised for dispatch.

The choice is usually decided by what the container will carry next, not by the container itself. A used IBC tank going into bulk chemicals, paints, resins, liquid waste or water is a different decision from one going into a product where the previous contents matter. So tell us what the unit will be filled with — and ask what the unit you are being offered last held. That is a fair question on any used container, and we would rather answer it than describe a unit as generically clean.

We do not manufacture. We supply, recondition, rebottle and wash — the second half of the container's working life is the part we handle.

Rebottling: a new bottle in your existing cage

Often the bottle reaches the end of its working life while the galvanised steel around it is still perfectly serviceable. HDPE develops stress cracking or holds residual odour from a previous product — both of which are on the list of things we inspect for — and at that point the plastic is finished even though the cage is not.

Rebottling fits a new HDPE bottle into the existing cage and pallet base. The cage comes out of the unit and is inspected for distortion, corrosion and damage; the pallet base is checked; the discharge valve is refitted, or replaced if it will not seal. If the cage passes, it goes back into service with a new bottle. If it does not, it is not reused — a distorted or corroded cage is not made sound by putting a new bottle inside it.

This is worth asking about before you scrap a fleet of IBC tanks whose only fault is the plastic. IBC washing on a collect-wash-return basis

If you want to keep your own units rather than exchange them, we wash them and give the same ones back. We collect from your site, hot wash the HDPE interior and wash the exterior, dry, inspect, replace any cap, gasket or valve that will not seal, and return the unit to you.

Previous contents set the treatment. Acids, alkalis, detergents, food concentrates and water all leave different residues on HDPE, and an IBC that last held bulk chemicals or resins is not handled the same way as one that held water. Tell us what was in it and we will tell you whether washing is enough or whether the bottle should be replaced.

What IBC tanks are used for

The customers moving 1000 litres at a time in the UAE are broadly the same across the emirates:

• Chemicals — bulk chemicals held and moved in working volumes rather than drum by drum.
• Paints and coatings — paints and resins where a full drum line is more handling than the batch needs.
• Oil and gas — bulk liquids moving between sites.
• Food and beverage — water and liquid concentrates, where previous contents are the deciding question on any used unit.
• Construction — water storage and site distribution.
• Waste management — liquid waste collection, where a valve and a forklift base matter more than appearance.

If the volume per product is under a few hundred litres, drums usually make more sense. We supply those too, new and reconditioned, in steel and in HDPE.

We also buy your empty IBC tanks

An IBC tank you have finished with is not scrap by default. We buy customers' empty IBC tanks along with empty steel and plastic drums, and we collect them ourselves from anywhere in the seven emirates.

Because we are a reconditioner with our own yard, units are inspected here at Al Sajaa — cage condition, bottle condition, valve, pallet base and previous contents — and assessed on what can actually be returned to service rather than on weight alone. A cage that will take a new bottle is a rebottling candidate, and that is how we look at it.
